Fearless Friday: Meet Rebecca

Today I want to give a shoutout to all the Mom’s who train and participate in running events with their babies.  While some events may discourage this we find it inspiring. YOU GO GIRL!! 

As a Mom of two young boys (6 & 10), I know how hard it can be to find the motivation to get myself moving and go for a run. Especially after a long day of working, making meals, cleaning, laundry, homework and bath time routines. I honestly never once thought to take my kids along with me. I always thought they wouldn’t behave long enough and I saw it as a hindrance.  I would wait for my Husband to watch them and then I would go. After meeting Rebecca – today’s Fearless Friday spotlight, I wish I had brought my kids along, I am sure they would have enjoyed being outside and I would have been able to exercise when it was convenient for me. 

I had the pleasure of meeting Rebecca last year when we both volunteered to be models for a day in the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South second annual Rotary Fashion Show which raised funds for Pathstone Mental Health.  – Rebecca’s place of employment.  Immediately Rebecca and I hit it off and I found out that she was a new Mom who liked to run and volunteer her time to support causes within the community. 

Rebecca tells her story …

I’ve actually been running all my life. Started track and field in elementary school winning in 100m, 200m, 400m and relay. Stopped running in college and realized it was my medicine, to help with my moods to feel balanced, a positive release!! I started running again in my late 20’s and decided to start doing races. Started with 5km, 10km, half marathon, full marathon and then 50km races a mix of road and trails! It’s addicting and since my 30’s I’ve been doing one race a month.

Training is more challenging with Millie but she loves running with mommy! Im now in my 40’s, a new mom and I’m running races and placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall in my age category. Running Niagara Falls Women’s Half 5km last year was inspirational. I admit I was a bit shocked when I arrived and I was the only women running the race pushing a stroller. My experience was exhilarating and I felt supported. This year I signed up to run again but this time no baby, Millie will be on the side line cheering mom on!

I’m actually fighting this year in the KOforkids charity boxing event on April 12th.  The event will raise money for Pathstones Mental Health hear and now clinic and BoxRun which is in support of McMaster sick kids, raising money for cancer research .
